Women in the LGBTQ sphere face higher levels of discrimination and harassment, sometimes even within our own community. Despite this, lesbians have been at the forefront of every crucial social movement, from women’s suffrage to Black Lives Matter. One way that Stonewall uplifts the unique contributions of lesbians is through the Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship.

Established by Phyllis Dicker and her late wife Margaret “Peggy” Traub, the Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship supports lesbian college students who are making a difference in their communities. Last year, three brilliant young women were selected from over 70 nationwide applicants. We were honored to award scholarships to:

J., a rising college freshman who fought to create a Gender & Sexuality Alliance club in her high school;

V., a college student working to increase support and visibility for women and queer and trans people in STEM at her university; and

K., a medical student hoping to return to her home state of Oklahoma to provide affirming healthcare for queer and trans people there. In her application, K. wrote, “LGBTQ people deserve to live healthy lives of their choosing, free from illness and stigma.” Her words ring true now more than ever.

Applications for this year’s Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship will be available in early April.
