Funding Spotlight: Brooklyn Community Pride Center
In December 2018, Brooklyn Community Pride Center (BCPC) applied for a one-year Bee’s Fund Block Grant to support the lesbian, bisexual, and transgender young women in their Pride Path program. Pride Path is BCPC’s paid internship program that connects LGBTQ+ young adults with work experience and mentorship. Many of their young people experience workplace discrimination because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, and prefer to work in the arts, entrepreneurship, and social services to attending college.
With their $4,500 grant, BCPC was able to support 10 young women in reaching their goals. Funds were used to help them get driver’s licenses, enroll in beauty school, apply for beautician’s licenses, and buy professional clothing for work and job interviews. One young woman who used her Bee’s Fund grant to apply to beauty school and take the state licensing exam wrote, “It is not easy to find a job that caters to or accepts members of the LGBT community, much less a career that provides lifelong happiness. So this is a big help.” We’re proud to help make her dream a reality.
